La Salle joins the Global Compact on Education
This May 5, at 12:00 p.m. Rome time, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools has publicly subscribed to the Global Compact on Education (GCE) proposed by Pope Francis.
“The Pope’s proposal for a Global Compact on Education draws on the deep wells of our experience and, more importantly, our charism to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially to the poor according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it”, said Brother Robert Schieler, Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Thereafter, Brother Robert signed the document with which Lasallians around the world adhere to the initiative of the Supreme Pontiff, indicating that “the moment could not be more auspicious, since the Pope is moving the Church towards a model of synodality” and “each believer is called to share in the Church’s mission of bearing witness to Jesus’ resurrection and values “.
The commitments of the GCE
The GCE expresses the commitment to the new generations and to the care of the common home by renewing the passion for a more open and inclusive education, democratising access to knowledge and promoting attentive listening, constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.
These aims are set out in the seven key commitments derived from the GCE:
- To make human persons the centre
- To listen to the voices of children and young people
- To encourage the full participation of girls and young women in education
- To consider the family as the first educator
- To educate and be educated in order to embrace the most vulnerable and marginalized
- To find new ways of understanding economy and politics, in the service of humanity.
- To safeguard our common home.
Under the leadership of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who carry on the educational legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, heavenly Patron of the world’s educators, from today all Lasallians around the world – teachers, parents, students, graduates… – will be able to join personally with the GCE through the website that has been launched to make known the commitments of the Compact.
La Salle is present in 79 countries worldwide through 1,125 educational centres in which more than one million children, young people and adults are educated. Its contribution to the world of quality human and Christian education has transcended more than 340 years.
